2004 PARALYMPICS, ATHENS
Fife AC sprinter Stephen Payton took a 400m bronze medal following fifth in both his 100m and 200m finals at the Athens Paralympics.
Payton, who won three gold medals in Atlanta followed by gold and silver in Sydney fought back to fitness following a broken ankle last February. A season’s best of 11.6 seconds in the 100m final was followed by a personal best 23.61 clocking in the 200m final. Monday night’s final evening in the Olympic stadium saw Payton round the final bend of the 400m in 4th place but a fighting finish saw the 27-year-old overhaul Russia’s Valeriy Stepanskoy in the final 50m to take the bronze in 52.32 seconds.

EAST NEUK 10K, ANSTRUTHER
A record 295 runners entered the East Neuk 10km race from Waid Academy, Anstruther. Welsh Commonwealth Games steeplechaser Donald Naylor (Hunters Bog Trotters) was out on his own at the head of the field returning to Waid in 32 minutes 57 seconds. Former Lothian veteran Colin Meek (Unatt.) placed an isolated second (34.05) followed by Brian Cook (Dundee Hawkhill) – 35.31.
Kirkcaldy over 40 runner John Murdoch was the first Fife AC runner home in 4th, third veteran (35.38) with Tom Scott 9th, first over 50 (36.18) and Andrew Cassidy 14th (37.26). Cardenden’s John Gilfillan had a keen battle with fellow super-veteran Frank McLaren placing 35th (40.14) with Frank in 36th (40.26).
The Fife AC ladies packed well into the top positions with Sarah Cullen 4th (42.21), Lorna Sibbett 5th (43.20), Margaret McLaren 6th (44.02), Louise Provan 10th (45.07) and Jocelyn Scott 11th (45.21). Caroline Legge took the female junior award in 51 minutes 22 seconds.

TWO BREWERIES HILL RACE, BROUGHTON
Andrew Liston, St.Andrews, contested the 21st Broughton Breweries Hill Race an 18 mile course from Traquair House, Innerleithan, to Broughton including 4900ft of ascent. The race doubled as both a British and Scottish championship counter with English internationalist Nick Sharp (Ambleside) first home in 2 hours 42 minutes 49 seconds. Andrew finished 8th in 2:54.47 which could have earned him enough points to place second overall in the Scottish Championship rankings.
Louise Burt finished 87th overall, eighth woman in 3 hours 32 minutes 52 seconds closely followed by Kirkcaldy over 50 athlete Alex McGuire in 90th – 3:34.33
RESULTS: 1 N.Sharp (Ambleside) 2:42.49, 2 C.Donnelly (RH Cambuslang) 1st veteran. 2:43.28, 3 J.Lennox (Shettleston) 2:44.39, 8 Andrew Liston 2:54.11, 87 Louise Burt 3:32.52, 90. Alex McGuire 3:34.33, 160 Rosie Stenhouse 4:15.44, 188 Louise Provan 4:47.30.
