A Boxing Day Pie for the Ovens
Despite the atrocious weather and a 1.3 mile course punctuated by puddles, 5 year old Millie Ovens won Fife AC's Boxing Day Handicap race with a huge smile on her face. Later, in the shelter of Kirkcaldy Rugby Club, Fife AC President Graham Kirby presented her with the club trophy and a large steak pie. Millie's mother Haley, a former Scottish internationalist and Commonwealth Games representative still holds the women's course record of 6 minutes 51 seconds, while Millie's father David was a formidable club athlete in his day. So with genes like these who knows what the future holds for Millie and her sister Holly?
For the first time in the history of the event, the fastest scratch time of the day was set by a woman. Scottish under 20 internationalist Stephanie Pennycook finished in 7 minutes 26 seconds - a commendable effort in the conditions. She was followed by local lads Ben Kinninmonth in 7:36, Liam Hutson in 7:41 and Ben's twin brother Joe Kinninmonth in 7:43.
