Race: 31st March 2013

Venue: Livingston

The Scottish Road Relay Championships at Livingston saw Fife AC excel in the over 50’s category winning the women’s title and finishing second in the men’s race.

Running over alternate stages of 5km and 10km Innes Bracegirdle, Gauldry, clocked 23 minutes 26 seconds before Kirkcaldy athlete Sandra Aitken completed the long 10km stage in 46 minutes 53 seconds. Kettlebridge’s Margaret McLaren clocked 24.53 for the anchor leg to secure team gold for the Fife trio.

The men’s over 50 team contested the four stage relay with John Thomson’s 18 minutes 16 seconds placing the quartet second to Ronhill Cambuslang over the opening 5km leg. Bryce Aitken clocked 36 minutes 22 seconds for the 10km stage before Kenneth Anthony’s 19.17 for the 5km held seconds place well clear of chasing clubs Calderglen and Ayr Seaforth. It was left to John Kay to complete the team effort timed at 35 minutes 07 seconds, the second fastest over 50 long stage time, coming home second behind Cambuslang.

The senior women’s quartet were led off by under 20 athlete Halina Rees (18.41) handing over to Amie McKimmie in third place. Amie clocked 37 minutes 15 seconds to place fourth before Jennifer Kibble’s 5km stage (20.16) in fifth place. The ever dependable Helen Sharpe, having travelled up from Bristol, tore around the final 10km stage in 34 minutes 14 seconds to bring the team home in fourth a minute down on the bronze medal place.

The senior men’s 6-stage championship was a painful experience for the club finishing in 32nd place. Dan Newman (20.34) and Andrew Murphy (34.05) ran well over the opening stage but with two late withdrawals from the team by younger athletes it was left to an over 60 and two over 65’s to secure even a finish.
